I have a student with an ATP MEL. He is retired military/airlines and just wants to fly privately but has no SEL ratings. Is it easier to add-on the SEL to his ATP, or do a Private ASEL checkride? What is the best way to accomplish it?
Check the additional rating/task tables in the ATP and PVT ACS's. They're in Appendix 5 In both. See what you think. You might also discuss this with the DPE who will give the ride.

I'd recommend he consider a Commercial Add-on. That way, if an opportunity comes up that would require a commercial license, he has the option to do it.
True, but then you have to do the Lazy 8's, Pylon 8's, and chandelles as part of the ride. The PVT ride is a lot simpler.
