Garmin 430/530 training

Every so often the PIC will get a call from someone who is either new to the 430/530 series or wants some remedial training on them. Most of the time they know the best training is hands on, but there's also the old adage that the worst place to learn is the cockpit. This is especially true when it comes to learning/re-learning avionics platforms. YouTube is full of videos and there are several training courses, syllabuses, etc. out there. What are some that pilots out there have had good success with?

The FAA has an ongoing series on Garmin 430/530 training. They have part 8 of this series on Monday, August 29th at 2000 EDT. Details can be found here. They've also published a GNS 430/530 syllabus for flight schools/flying clubs, located here

There are a few desktop simulators out there but I've run into a problem where they're so old they don't work with the current operating systems that are on typical PCs today.

If you go to the Garmin website you can download a 400 series simulator to your PC and work with it on your kitchen table.

I like King Schools course. It's $179, but is well organized and comprehensive.

If you go to the Garmin website you can download a 400 series simulator to your PC and work with it on your kitchen table.

That simulator is a useful tool for a CFI giving training on the GNS devices but by itself won't teach you anything.  My personal favorite for self-teaching the 400/500-series is the one from Electronic Flight Solutions:

Garmin GNS 530 / GNS 430 Computer-based Trainer | Sun Flight Avionics Training

While it's pre-WAAS, it is an excellent package, and the differences to WAAS are easily learned with other training systems.  Of course, you do need a CD reader for this one.
