Aircraft altitude Restrictions for BasicMed

Under BasicMed the aircraft altitude restriction is 18,000'.  Does this mean the plane has to have a service ceiling no higher than 18K or that the pilot just has to make sure that he flies below 18K at all times?

We're looking to purchase a 182 for our flying club but a number of our members are on basic med.  Most Turbo 182s have a service ceiling higher than 18k so we want to make sure that we purchase a plane that wouldn't be restricted to only those with an actual FAA Med cert.

@Hank Williams
See 61.113(i).

The aircraft restrictions are in 61.113(i)(1).  6 max and 6,000# max takeoff weight.

61.113(i)(2) contains limitations for the flight (not the aircraft).  18,000' max altitude for the flight.

You should be just fine purchasing the 182 you mention.

@Kristian Kortokrax Thanks, that definitely answers the question!

Hi Hank,

I've attached the Advisory Circular for BasicMed as well as the FAA FAQs on BasicMed if you haven't seen them.  They are a good resource for any questions you might have down the road.
