2nd class AASI downgraded to 3rd class ?

Hello I recently held a second class SI certificate while holding an authorization letter that expires June 30, 2025 (AASI 2nd class). I returned for my 12 month exam in June and presented the AME with this AASI letter and all the required documentation. The examiner issued a second class and a month later I received a letter from the FAA stating they were unable to determine my eligibility and requested the previously submitted  documentation.

I contacted the AME and he resubmitted the paperwork. A month later I received an AASI for a third class expiring June 30, 2026.

I am not sure why my second class application and approval letter was downgraded to a third class. I provided all the required documentation on time under a valid AASI. I do not currently require a second class as a student pilot certificate holder. However, I was planning on applying for some Commercial schools that require a second class.

Can anyone point me in the right direction in the FAR as to why this was downgraded? Are there any avenues for contesting this down grade? Could my AME have incorrectly resubmitted as a third class application?

If I understand this, you still  have the Second Class medical certificate the AME initially issued, they did not send you a new medical certificate, and the only question is what's in the new SI letter.  Have you called the number in the SI letter and asked them about this?  I've had typographical errors in my SI letter in the past, which were resolved by calling them.  On one occasion, it took three tries to get the letter right, but it finally did get corrected.

I currently have a 2nd class issued by the examiner, a 3rd class issued by the FAA and 2 AASI letters both unexpired.

OK, so along with the new SI letter they sent you a Third Class which supersedes the Second Class the AME issued originally.  I'm assuming you've already asked asked the AME if he knows anything.  In that case, it's time to call Oklahoma City and ask why.  The number is on the SI letter.  Once you know why they downgraded, you can work on a course of action with someone like Dr. Bruce Chien, who will probably stop by here tonight and comment.  If you can find out the "why" before then, he will be much better able to advise you.

I would just call 405-954-4821 in the AM,  and inquire!
