I was issued my special issue certificate in November and I got a letter a few days ago that said this:
We have received your electronically-transrnitted application for medical
certification from your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Based upon our
initial review of this information, we are unable to establish your
eligibility to hold an airman medical certificate at this time.
Am I still legal to fly? The letter did not ask me to surrender my medical certificate that expires at the end of may. I called the Aeromedical Certification Branch and he said that it looks like it is still valid to fly, but my AME thinks is it not. HELP!!!!!
@Brian Aerni
I'm guessing the rest of the letter includes a request for additional information, but not language suspending or revoking the certificate you were issued. In that case, you may continue flying for as long as the certificate is valid based on the date of examination printed on it.
However, the letter probably also includes a time limit to submit that additional information. If you fail to submit the requested information within the time limit, you can expect another letter cancelling that certificate, so do get on your horse and gather/submit that additional information.
@Ronald Levy
it does not clearly specify that the certificate is revoked or suspended. My AME said I couldn't fly but the folks in Oklahoma say I can. Its frustrating because I started getting the additional information the FAA requested when I got my special issue, however one of the guys i had to see had a two month wait to get in to see him and then he took another 2 months to get me the report. I have been playing this game with the FAA for about 4 years and have jumped through every hoop they have given me. Its just super frustrating sometimes. If you email me (brian@avi8or.net) I can forward you the letter if you'd like

Then you can continue to fly.

Your AME may be an expert in determining whether someone meets the requirements for issuance of a medical certificate (i.e., Part 67), but not on Part 61. Trust OKC on this.

What was the deadline they gave you for submitting the additional information? As long as you meet that deadline, it's not a big deal. If you're going to miss it, you should submit a request for extension explaining the delay in getting to see the doctor and getting the report back. Just don't miss the deadline without communicating the problem to the FAA.

Naw, that's your personal information which I neither need nor want to know. 😉
Fly safe,
