Private Airport Regulations

Any guidance to FAA/FAR's and or state restrictions on private use airports?   Having trouble searching the internet for answers.

Are you asking about operating at one or landing at one?  If it's landing, the FAA has no rules -- it's entirely up to the property owner.  The applicable state rules would basically be trespassing laws, i.e., property owner's permission required.  States or local authorities may have zoning or other restrictive laws which would affect the operation of a private airport, but that would be the concern of the airport operator/property owner.  In any event, state/local laws would vary, maybe wildly, and you'd have to do some legal research for whatever government has local jurisdiction.

I am familiar with your references to secure permission prior to landing at a private air patch.   Aside from any state or local regulations I was looking to see if there were restrictions on who could actually operate on a private use airport if permission is given by the owner.   The airport in question is a noncharted grass field with no commercial activities or flight training.   The airport owner has his 3 aircraft hangared there.   Someone advised him that only immediate family could operate out of the field.  I cannot find any reference to any restrictions aside from having the owner's permission.

Ask him who told him that and find out why they said that.  Might be legal advice to limit his liability, might be some sort of deed restriction, might be someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.  Might even be the owner just doesn't want outsiders landing there and is politely giving you a line so you'll go away without hard feelings -- be prepared for a more blunt response the next time you ask.  But I've never heard of such a restriction set by state or local law.

The airport owner is a friend who has invited me to share a hangar.   The source is the resident all knowing expert on all things aviation.   I will press the expert for his source/reference.   Thanks for your replies.
