I have an expired CFI that was issued on 03/13/1975. What is required to get my CFI reinstated? I know I have to take the flight exam, but do I have to take a written or any other training/testing?
You will need to pass a flight instructor practical test for either one of the ratings you currently hold or a new additional rating. No written required. See 14 CFR 61.199(a).
There is no requirement for any training or signoff from an instructor before you fill out, sign, and submit your Form 8710-1 application and take the test. However, even if you are going for a test for a rating you already hold, it would be a really good idea to get some training with a current, active, and highly experienced CFI because a lot has changed since 1975.
The only thing I wished I had done differently was to just do an add on Instrument Instructor, which would have given me that rating and revalidated my CFI at the same time!
Thanks guys for the good advice!! I'm thinking I should take the FIRC course offered by AOPA also.

That"s what I did when I came back from 6 years over in Europe with my CFI expired. Turned out to be a really good choice.
