Jen Tyler here. Brand new to flight training. Taking lessons in a Flight Design CTSW. Love this little thing! Let's show the love for the light sport. You guys are awesome. Six years ago, my wife gave me a "Discovery Flight" coupon for my 52nd birthday and I was hooked. Since there weren't any flight schools with LSAs here in southern Connecticut, I bought a lightly-used 2010 Jabiru J230 (which I still own) to train in. Since earning my certificate, I've had the pleasure of spending four hundred hours flying solo and with family and friends to fourteen states -- from Maine to Tennessee. While one is limited to Cessna 172 speeds, LSAs can still be great cross-country airplanes.
Regardless of your end goal, training in an LSA is a great way to begin. You'll develop superior "stick and rudder" skills because, frankly, you'll need 'em to fly that CTSW you are training in or any other LSA well -- as opposed to more forgiving trainers like a 172 or the Diamond DA40 I did my first 10 hours in.
Three suggestions:
-- Get the additional endorsements to operate in Class B, C, and D airspace. It's a simple matter, and it makes operating in the eastern U.S. much easier and more enjoyable.
-- Consider supplementing your training with some of the Internet based tools available. For example, I found the videos and animations in the Sporty's online course well worth the price in supplementing my text book material and ground school discussions. There are excellent free videos on Youtube... "The UND AeroCast" from the University of North Dakota, "The Finer Points of Flying," "King Schools" and more.
