She read an article of how a 63 year old died while piloting an aircraft and the only reason they knew that happened is another pilot was in the plane and landed it. So, now she is of the belief people my age, 65 should not fly. Especially since commercial airline pilots can't fly for the airlines any more past 65. Of course, we all know she is wrong. However. OK this is where I and someone I miss stood on this issue. If you can pass a "medical" and bi-annual flight review, then go for it in your personal flying life. But here's where my opinion changes. Our Warbirds in private and or flying museums. My dad ( 50000 hours and 32 Type ratings ), brought this topic up years ago at the Confederate Airforces (Commerative), after they lost a Corsair. These planes were flown in the hands of nimble young men and women in their prime. Even much older than that ie. he flew in Reno alot too. But he always said age is not equated to proficiency. It can be. We all like to see some gray hairs on our pilot when we walk by the cockpit on a commercial airliner. Sully was a great example. Experience is golden, but where do we drawn the line with the Rarest of Rare planes? My dad voluntarily quit flying the the CAF at age 71. He knew and admitted it. He argued there were even younger guys he felt shouldn't get in the cockpit of anything especially fighters ( his opinion of course ). Primarily because of their low time in type.
The tragic accident this past weekend and the complete loss of a C47 during takeoff at Burnett, Texas, heading to Oskosh, has me wondering again. There is no official report regarding what caused the plane's crash on takeoff and thankfully there was no loss of life. ( a miracle ) So at the end of the day there may not have been anything those involved could have done. I hope that is the case. But, and I say but with great caution, if this was pilot error, etc. then I feel we all need to quit tip toe'n around this sensitive issue with our rare planes, and especially those flying museums. Maybe for some it's "Park Em and Look".
That and a buck will get you coffee somewhere. My thoughts only.
